EEAS – Funded traineeship for young graduates at the EU Delegation to the African Union

Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in African Union?

We offer:

A traineeship of 6 months within the Cooperation/Policy Section and the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation to the African Union, starting in April 2021t.

The Trainee will work under the overall guidance of the Heads of Sections Cooperation and Policy (CP) and Political, Press, Information (PPI) and the day to day steering of the Team Leader for Horizontal and Communication of the Cooperation and Policy Section in close cooperation with the Delegation Press and Information Officer. The trainee will assist the EU Delegation to the AU in its cooperation and political work with the African Union, in particular assisting in the preparation of communication and visibility aspects of the AU-EU meetings and the EU-AU summit as well as in strategic communication activities.

Main tasks:

  • Support both the Cooperation and Policy Section and the Political Section by: a) preparing and organizing meetings or events (including logistical aspects); b) attending meetings and preparing minutes of those; c) contributing to the preparation of statements, speeches, reports and information collection. Particular focus will be on the communication and visibility preparatory work for the EU-AU Summit and related events and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the communication and visibility work of the EU Delegation: a) assisting in the preparation, revision and finalisation of specific communication projects and activities including contacts with external contractors and stakeholders; b) drafting press releases, project fiches and other communication documents; c) updating website information, contributing to social media work; d) contributing to the organisation of virtual and (if condition allows) physical events, e) supporting in any other strategic communication tasks.
  • Undertake research on some specific Cooperation / Policy issues and make summaries of key papers and of meetings.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Master degree in political, economic, communication science or another social science.
  • Shown interest or experience in organising events.
  • Shown interest in public relations, communication etc.
  • Experience with international environment including in a multilateral setting.
  • Demonstrated motivation, initiative, responsibility and flexibility.
  • Ability to work well in teams.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of English is required, working knowledge of French will be an asset.

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship)

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travel inside the country of residence, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidate is not able to present the required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.

Non-resident candidates must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation.

The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin. In assessing the applications received, account will need to be taken of the COVID-19 situation and its possible effects on access possibilities to the country of assignment and thus candidates currently residing in country of assignment might be preferred.

The Delegation informs that even if our Headquarters confirm the eligibility of the selected candidate, traineeships could be postponed, suspended or even cancelled considering the very evolving context of the COVID-19 outbreak in the host country as well as in the country of origin. The same rule apply if a selected candidate is unable to reach the country of assignment.
